BUILD tyrell just clears 6'0. generally he’s sharp, fairly slim and faintly muscular. he’s never had issues with weight: he keeps a strict regimen, working out daily and eating well.
SKIN fairly pale, but soft. tyrell keeps a strict regimen of washing and moisturising. he doesn’t have many freckles, but they’re spread out on his shoulders and back mostly in faint, concentrated bursts.
HAIR light brown, usually either pushed back away from his face or falling over his forehead if he isn’t paying so much attention to it. in the sun it turns very definitively dark blond.
EYES striking, very light blue - it’s not just the colour of them that strikes, but the size, too.
SCENTS very, very clean, but not so cold it’s clinical: in fact, he smells quite warm, almost cinnamony. underneath that: the distinct smells of argan oil, non-perfumed moisturiser and salt.

First impressions of Tyrell can be summed up with one word: distant. He projects a typically cold air that acts as a kind of veneer, and comes across as very closed-off, if approachable and fairly pleasant, in the way that people in high positions in business usually are - even though he no longer works for E Corp, the attitude is hard to shake with strangers. By contrast, when he considers himself close to someone, he's very open and more prone to making jokes, smiling and laughing, verging on playful. He also tends to touch people a lot when he's close to them, usually on the shoulders or upper arms.
In spite of growing up with only moderate wealth (or perhaps because of it), Tyrell is overly focused on social status, and arrogant and judgemental because of it. He takes good care of himself and puts a lot of stock into how he looks, what he wears, etc., and tends to look down on people who don't do the same. As much as expensive suits are a quantifiable way for him to present himself as distant and separate and prove his wealth, he likes wearing them because he wants to look good. He relies on the system of capitalism like he has his whole life because it worked for him, and regards people who don't fit the mould distastefully. He's also exceedingly prone to jealousy, both in the material sense and in other ways too - for example, jealous of someone who's higher up the ladder than him, jealous of someone who has better control over themselves than he does, jealous of someone who is neurotypical. To protect the 'affluent, indomitable businessman' illusion, he's a habitual, almost compulsive, liar, and he lies both to other people and himself on multiple occasions. For example, in spite of the fact that after killing Sharon he started to cry, almost threw up, and generally did not keep his cool, he later told Elliot that rather than feeling guilty for being a murderer, he 'felt wonder'. This was in equal parts a lie to Elliot, to maintain Elliot's fear of him, and a lie to himself, to detach himself from what he did.
In everything he does, Tyrell is perhaps atypically dedicated. He has a pervasive, sharp focus on what he wants, and even if he's more likely to want to improvise than spend hours on a detailed plan, he knows what he needs to do to get it. To that extent, he's exceedingly stubborn, prone to lashing out if something doesn't go his way. Somewhat paradoxically, he's also impulsive, acting without considering the ramifications of his actions and only later becoming aware of them.
Tyrell also deals with anger management issues. He's prone to outbursts of extreme emotion, and when he realises that he is being passed over for the CTO position, he pays a homeless man so that he can beat him up to release anger. Though at one point the man asks him to stop, he keeps going until he's tired himself out. On another occasion, after Scott Knowles tells him he knows about Tyrell's attempted seduction of his wife and that he will never be CTO, he has what can only be described as a tantrum at home, smashing glasses and plates. Joanna is calmly eating and ignoring him while he does this, which suggests she's used to the outbursts.
In terms of my own interpretation, I headcanon that Tyrell has Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). His father sent him to a therapist when he was about seventeen, and Tyrell only agreed to see the therapist with the guarantee that the conversation would be off the record. Though the therapist saw him a few times and diagnosed him officially with BPD, it doesn't state so on his official medical records. Tyrell has had a quantifiable diagnosis hanging over his head for a long time and although in most experiences diagnoses are a cause for relief, for Tyrell it didn't help at all - he has a habit of visualising things that he considers negative about himself as a sort of ominous cloud hanging over his head, following him around and colouring his interactions with people. After he was diagnosed, he didn't do any research into BPD beyond cursory pamphlet reading (which by 2015/16 would have become thoroughly outdated). He didn't want to face the reality of the situation and he never has since then. BPD is erroneously regarded as a disorder that makes people manipulative, cruel and incapable of love, and Tyrell has chosen to deal with this by taking the negative stigma and turning it inwards on himself as a form of self-hatred, while pushing the negative aspects as genuine personality traits because they feed into the illusion he created for himself.
BPD colours most, if not all, of Tyrell's everyday interactions. It is a disorder characterised by extremes of emotion - he either loves you or hates you, and this opinion can flip at the slightest provocation. It's hard for him to separate reactions associated with BPD with genuine opinions. Also, Tyrell is naturally aligned to polyamory, especially because he runs on impulse and will make moves on people he's interested in just because he feels like it - but it takes a lot for him to get over feelings like jealousy and bitterness if someone he's seeing (or even just in a casual relationship with) is in turn seeing someone else. He has a compulsion to make sure he's the number one priority in someone else's life, alongside the fact that due to his own conceited nature, he becomes attached both to the person he's in a relationship with, but also to the attention they give him. He likes to have affection and attention from other people, and he likes for what he does to be approved of. He doesn't need other people per se; he just needs how they affect his ego.
HISTORY
CHILDHOOD
tyrell's father is an oyster fisherman. it's good money to fish for oysters, but somehow never enough to splurge, never enough for tyrell to get the puppy he wants for christmas, the new bike he needs, the latest computer he saw in a magazine. even with his mother dead and his father turning a blind eye to his staunch opposition to the father-son bonding opportunities he's dragged out on, tyrell is never a problem child, never a misbehaver. teachers call him mature for his age, likeable, popular. he
is popular, but the kind of popular that mitigates any close friendships. everybody knows who he is, but nobody really knows him. from an early age tyrell knows how to push people, to make them like him. when he's fourteen he burns his arm, badly, on a metal kettle while out camping with his father. his father has scores of pictures of the two of them together, smiling brightly, holding dead fish or covered in dirt and rainwater. tyrell doesn't like looking at them.
COLLEGE
tyrell goes to the KDH royal institute of technology in stockholm, sweden, where he gets a masters in computer science. he does his work, likes learning about computers. there's an intrinsic nature to everything he does, every line of code he writes. this is what he's good at; this is what he enjoys. he falls into and out of relationships with boys his age, sometimes a few years older. when he's twenty-one he starts seeing a PhD student, eight years older than him. in retrospect it wasn't healthy, but then so are most relationships. he never calls any of them his boyfriend; he doesn't have time for things like that, doesn't want to tie himself down to something.
JOANNA
sweden and denmark reach out to each other across öresund bridge. tyrell meets joanna on her side, at a party where she calls him tyler for twenty minutes, without fail, and lets his corrections fly directly over her head. she's a friend of a friend of a friend, and she doesn't say anything to anyone but she talks to him and it feels worthwhile to have come all this way. he's never seen someone so in control of herself, and it scares him; he's never been weak, in any sense of the word, but with him at twenty-three and her freshly twenty he doesn’t know why he cares what she thinks, only that it can't be fear, it can’t be intimidation. but she's young and headstrong and she says his name - tyrell, this time, when she's pressed against the brick and the wind is whipping up around them and diving under his skin and summoning up an irregular spattering of gooseflesh over his abdomen, the back of his neck, the breadth of his arms - and takes his hand with purpose and lets it fit against the curve of her throat, and she smiles when he tightens his grip, and tyrell thinks:
she understands me. she knows me inside out. they marry within a year. they move to new york three weeks after he turns twenty-four. he gets a job at e corp. joanna says he’s worth more than coding. he agrees.
